On October 28, the EPC Contractor issued the Notification of Award  to DFEM (DEC Ltd.’s subsidiary) for Equipment & Auxiliaries Supply Contract of 720MW Karot Hydropower Project, which is known as the First Hydropower Project of “the Belt & Road” and the first Hydropower Project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Karot Hydropower Project is located at the Jehlum River, the upstream of the Karot Bridge of Punjab Province, about 74km away from Mangla Dam and 55km away from Islamabad. The development of the Project is undertaken by the Karot Power Company (Private) Limited (“KPCL”), among which the major shareholder is a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. Equipped with 720MW hydro-generating units and production of 3.213 billion kWh per year, Karot will be the 5th largest Hydropower Project in Pakistan. Due to its extreme importance and extraordinary meaning, Karot was listed as key project of the “the Belt & Road” as well as CPEC. Furthermore, it’s also the first hydropower project which was written in Joint Declaration of the Government of China and Pakistan.

Based on abundant experiences of cooperation in domestic hydropower projects like Three Gorges, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Hohhot, and Gezhouba extension etc., Karot Hydropower Project will become the first project of overseas cooperation between DEC Ltd. and CTG. Without a doubt, it will be a further enhancement both for DEC Ltd.’s ability of design and manufacturing large hydro-generating units and the relationship of cooperation between two groups.

Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning that DEC Ltd. was also awarded the generating units of Port Qasim 2×660 MW Super Critical Coal-fired Power Project on May 21, 2015, which is the First Thermal Power Project of CPEC. Undertaking both the first hydropower project and the first thermal power project, DECL definitely plays an important role in CPEC projects.
